Art Show Part 3

June 3, 2011

Finally getting around to posting about what 4th and 5th graders created for the Folk Tales, Fables, and Fairy Tales Art Show!

Fourth graders read the story about Rapunzel and then we created self portraits with paint.  This was a fun project that I pulled from my very full brain of ideas on the theme.  To tie in Rapunzel’s long locks; we used yarn for the hair and had it extend beyond the picture composition.   The kids had a blast coming up with creative ways to add the long hair.  One student created very lonnnnng eyelashes!

Fourth graders also created Pirate Ships.  We read some stories about Pirates from the Caribbean and then designed our own ships.  We used various pieces of painted papers from the scrap boxes to create the fleet of ships!

Fifth graders had a little more freedom to create some stacked sandwiches.  This didn’t exactly tie in to my theme but did fit the imagination and believing idea.  The requirement was to create food items to place in a sandwich.  We used the collage technique to create the food items.  Any food item was acceptable; even ice cream and fruit!

Some students’ went so far as to add fabric napkins and condiments on the side of the table!

We did create a project that was inspired by Jack and The Beanstalk.  I read a couple of versions of the tall tale and then asked each student to create a portrait of their self climbing a bean stalk.  We painted giant beanstalks and then added our portraits to them.  The beanstalks were hung on the walls and created a nice life like effect.  Some fifth graders had extra time to create giants too.
