First Grade Portraits

October 20, 2010

This was our first project of the school year in First Grade.  I found this project idea at Deep Space Sparkle.  This site has lots of great ideas for art projects.  Most often I come up with my own lesson ideas, but there are times when you find something that you just have to use in your own art class!  So thanks to all the art teachers out there that are willing to share his/her lesson ideas.

First graders really enjoyed this self-portrait project.  We talked about facial features and expressions and how we can draw them.  We also had a very lengthy discussion about hats.  I think I found out what every first grader has for hats at home!  We used black crayons to draw our portraits and water paint to add color.  So much fun!
